According to reports, today Randy Lerner is set to start interviewing potential replacements for Phil Savage and Romeo Crennel. It looks like he will be busy with three meetings taking place. Scott Pioli will be the first candidate interviewed for the vacant GM position. And it is also reported that Lerner will meet with recently fired Jets head coach Eric Mangini and New York Giants Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. Also in the mix is recently demoted Atlanta GM Rich McKay, who is said to have a meeting set for Thursday with Lerner.
I'm happy Lerner is not waiting on making these decisions. We need closure and we need it fast. The quicker we can put 2008 behind us the better. My hope is that by the time the ball drops in Time Square we will have Scott Pioli as our GM and have to cancel the meeting with Rich McKay. If that happens I would look for the coaching search to be sewn up by week's end.
Mangini has some great qualities and ties to Cleveland, plus he was cast in the Soprano's for one episode. The only problem with Mangini is that he burnt some bridges with Belichick and his staff and in a perfect world Pioli would be able to raid the Patriots staff much like Parcells in Miami did to the Cowboys last year. Maybe that was all media hype and the only beef was with Belichick.
If Pioli can raid Belichick's staff, getting Josh McDaniel as an offensive coordinator would be ideal. If McDaniels comes in to work with Quinn and the offense, I think keeping Romeo would be a huge mistake. The last thing we need is a locker room divided, especially if Pioli can get a guy like Pepper Johnson, who currently coaches the Patriots defensive line. A clean break with Pioli, Mangini, McDaniels, and Johnson would be a great staff and make for a quick turn around in 2009.
Although Spagnuolo might be a deserving head coach, I think it is apparent Lerner wants someone with experience. Plus, the Giants are looking at a long playoff run and you might not have a Head Coach until February if Spagnuolo gets the job. We need this done quicker than that so I think he is just a formality.
Those of you thinking about Mike Shannahan can stop right now. He is owed $20 million over the next three years and I'm positive he will be living on a beach playing 36 holes a day for 2009. Plus he is an Elway guy, and Bernie would no doubt punch him in the face in a weird side arm motion.
