Areas of need, available options

Jones

As a 4-12 team, the Browns have plenty of holes to fill.  Free agency is looming around the corner starting midnight on the 27th.  Here is a list of the team's biggest needs and the options that are available to fill them.

  • Outside Linebacker, Pass Rusher – The Browns were tied for second to last in sacks last season. That allowed opposing quarterbacks have all day to throw the ball and put added pressure on the secondary.

A. Free Agents: Terrell Suggs (Franchised), Julius Peppers (Franchised), Leroy Hill (Franchised), Angelo Crowell, Jason Babin, Kevin Burnett

B. Draft First Round: Aaron Curry, Everette Brown, Brian Orakpo, Aaron Maybin, Brian Cushing

C. Draft Second Round: Larry English, Clay Matthews Jr., Michael Johnson, Clint Sintim

Analysis: The impact free agents have been franchised and are now off the market. According to Mel Kiper and Mike Mayock, this is the deepest draft in years for outside linebackers for a 3-4. The Browns should be able to find a starting caliber player in the first or secondround. The veterans that are left would be valuable as a cheaper Antwaan Peek type veteran.

  • Inside Linebacker, Run Stuffer – The Browns ranked 28th against the run. They lost to the 4-11-1 Bengals when back up Ryan Fitzpatrick threw a total of nine passes for 55 yards. Cedric Benson ran for 171 yards that game.

A. Free Agents: Channing Crowder, Karlos Dansby (Franchised), Bart Scott, Jonathan Vilma, Eric Barton

B. Draft First Round: Rey Maualuga, James Laurinaitis

C. Draft mid rounds: Jasper Brinkley, Worrell Williams, Scott McKillop

Analysis: Two top free agents will be available in Channing Crowder and Bart Scott. They will be in high demand and carry a heavy price tag. Vilma is not really an option as he was already not a fit with Mangini or the 3-4. The draft is thin at inside linebacker. The top two players would fit nicely, but the other available talent most likely would not be ready to start this season. This means the only real options to fill this position are a top tier free agent or a 1st round draft choice.

  • Strong Safety – The Browns have a hole at strong safety as both Sean Jones and Mike Adams are free agents.

A. Free Agents: Sean Jones, Jermaine Phillips, Yeremiah Bell, James Butler, Jim Leonhard, Brian Dawkins, James Sanders, Renaldo Hill, Darren Sharper, Mike Brown, Atari Bigby (Restricted), Dawan Landry (Restricted), Gibril Wilson

B. Draft Second Round: William Moore, Louis Delmas, Patrick Chung

C. Draft mid rounds: Chip Vaughn, Rashad Johnson, Emmanuel Cook, Kevin Ellison, Michael Hamlin, David Bruton

Analysis: The options for safety are plentiful. The Browns can sign one of the top free agents, draft a player in the second round that could step in, or sign one of the older players to start for a year or two while developing a mid round rookie.

  • No. 2 and No. 3 Wide Receiver – The Browns failed to find a wide receiver to play opposite Braylon Edwards last season. Donte Stallworth was not the answer. They cannot count on the return of Joe Jurevicius. They need to acquire two receivers.

A. Free Agents: T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Antonio Bryant (Franchised), Devery Henderson, Nate Washington, Justin McCareins, Michael Clayton, Bryant Johnson, Brandon Jones, Reggie Williams, Ronald Curry, Bobby Engram, Amani Toomer, Terrence Copper, Ashlie Lelie

B. Draft First Round: Michael Crabtree, Jeremy Maclin, Percy Harvin

C. Draft Second Round: D. Hayward Bay, Brian Robiskie

D. Draft mid Rounds: Derrick Williams, Ramses Barden, Joaquin Iglesias, Patrick Turner, Quan Cosby, Greg Carr

Analysis: There are plenty of options in the free agent market to find a No. 2 caliber receiver at a low cost. The Browns could find a player that could be what Stallworth was suppoed to be. A No. 2 receiver could also be found in the first or second round. A No. 3 receiver would be available in the middle rounds.

  • Right Tackle – Kevin Shaffer struggled against speed rushers last season.  The right side of the line also didn't get the push in the running game that was needed.  If the Browns could acquire a new tackle, Shaffer could slide inside to guard.

A. Free Agents: Vernon Carey (Resigned), Jordan Gross (Resigned), Stacy Andrews, Max Starks (Franchised), Khalif Barnes, Kwame Harris

B. Draft First Round: Andre Smith, Eugene Monroe, Michael Oher, Jason Smith

Analysis: Other teams have depleted the free agent market by resigning or Franchising the top players. The only real starting option would be Stacy Andrews. The draft is loaded with top tackles but one would need to be selected in the first round.

  • Running Back Depth & Eventual Replacement – Jamal Lewis will be 30 this season. He has shown signs of slowing down. Jerome Harrison is not a feature back. With two headed running back attacks becoming the norm in the NFL, the Browns need to find another option.

A. Free Agents: Brandon Jacobs (Franchised), Derrick Ward, Cedric Benson, Deshaun Foster

B. Draft First Round: Knowshon Moreno, Chris Wells

C. Draft Second Round: LeSean McCoy, Shonn Greene, Donald Brown

D. Draft mid rounds: Rashad Jennings, Andre Brown, Jeremiah Johnson, James Davis, Javon Ringer, Cedric Peerman, Glen Coffee, P.J. Hill, Gartrell Johnson, Mike Goodson

Analysis: The top available free agent will be Ward but he is 29 and is looking to cash in. The combine showed that this group of rookies is not a fast bunch, but a power back should be available anywhere in the draft.

  • Cornerback – The Browns corners were hot and cold all year. They need to find another player that can be the nickel back and compete with Brandon McDonald for the starting role.

A. Free Agents: Nnamdi Asomugha (Resigned), Kelvin Hayden (Resigned), Ronald Bartell, Dunta Robinson (Franchised), Bryant McFadden, Domonique Foxworth, Jabari Greer, Andre Goodman, Eric Green, Chris Carr, Keiwan Ratliff, Deltha O’Neal, Corey Ivy

B. Draft First Round: Malcolm Jenkins, Vontae Davis

C. Draft Second Round: Sean Smith, D.J. Moore, Alphonso Smith, Darius Butler

D. Draft mid rounds: Mike Mickens, Victor Harris, Cary Harris, DeAngelo Smith

Analysis: There are plenty of options available in free agency or the draft. Teams have already shown that a veteran free agent won't come cheap, but the Browns already have two young players without much experience.

  • Back Up Quarterback – The Browns only have two quarterbacks on the roster. Both of them are suited for different types of offenses. The Browns need to decide on a type of offense and which quarterback is better suited for that scheme. They then need to get trade value out of the other player. They then need to bring on a cheaper veteran to back up and mentor either young signal caller.

A. Free Agents: Byron Leftwich, Kyle Boller, Chris Simms, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Rex Grossman, J.P. Losman, J.T. O’Sullivan, Charlie Batch

Analysis: The group of free agents lacks a star name. These players have all flashed some talent but have been inconsistent. They still hold some potential though, especially in a reserve role.

  • D-Line Depth – Shaun Rogers is at least 350 pounds. He cannot go all game long without a break. It was evident last season that when he came out of the game, the defensive line was blown off the ball. The Browns need to find suitable depth for him. Also, Robaire Smith is a 320-pound  man recovering from an Achilles heel injury. He may or may not be able to return. If he can’t, the team needs to find a replacement.

A. Free Agents: Chris Canty, Igor Olshansky, Antonio Smith, Tank Johnson, Colin Cole, Grady Jackson, Gabe Watson (Restricted)

B. Draft mid rounds: Fili Moala, Terrence Taylor, Sammie Lee Hill, Terrance Knighton, Jarron Gilbert, Khalif Mitchell, Ra’Shon Harris

Analysis: The Browns need to hope for a healthy Robaire Smith. A defensive end in free agency is going to be very costly. Refer to Corey Williams last offseason. If Smith can’t go, they will need to open the check book. Depth should be available late in the draft or as undrafted free agents.
