It seems like only yesterday LeCharles Bentley showed up at a press conference in Berea wearing a Browns double zero jersey, smiling ear-to-ear overjoyed with the opportunity to play center for his hometown Browns.
Then came July 27, 2006. In the Browns first 11-on-11 session of training camp, Bentley tore his pateller tendon and missed the entire season. He suffered problems in recovery that included a bout with a staph infection and it slowed his progress. A year after the injury, he said his knee was "about 70 percent" and started 2008 on the PUP list.
Finally, on June 10, 2008, Bentley rejoined the Browns on the practice field. A day later he asked for, and was granted, his release from the Browns. He did not sign with a team in 2008 and in January of this year he retired.
Now, Bentley has moved on from his playing days that included two Pro Bowl seasons and started the LeCharles Bentley O-Line Academy in Avon, Ohio. The Academy is labeled as "the country's only offensive line training facility" and caters to everyone from an NFL veteran to a high school freshman.
Here is a video of Bentley giving a tour of his facility, "MTV Cribs" style. He's looking slimmed down from his playing weight and in good spirits.
After seeing the joy he expressed when he signed as a free agent in 2006 to the troubles he went through with his injury, it is good to see Bentley doing something positive.
That is something all football fans, not just Browns fans, can support.
