In the days following the 2009 NFL Draft, NoLogoNeeded.com reached out to members of the media that covered the Browns’ eight draft picks.
Once a day for the next eight days, we’ll feature our interview with the media member starting with Mack and ending with Davis.
Today, the Virginian-Pilot’s Vicki Friedman answered our questions regarding Norfolk State cornerback Don Carey.

Don Juan Jesu Carey III was born Feb. 14, 1987. That's Valentine’s Day and he is named “Don Juan,” can you feel the love? Whether or not Browns fans fall in love with the cornerback from Norfolk State remains to be seen.
One scenario Carey could gain legions of followers: Carey blocks a Jeff Reed extra point attempt and the Browns beat the Steelers 20-19. The love affair would last forever.
That love affair has already been established at Norfolk State. In 2007, Norfolk State entered its game against Hampton losers of six consecutive against its biggest rival.
“He has this uncanny ability to block kicks,” Friedman said. “He blocked an extra point attempt against Hampton that helped them win that game 20-9. He’ll tell you he planned that blocked kick. He read where Hampton lined previously. I can’t stress you how huge that was. Two hours after the game they were still yelling, ‘We beat Hampton!’ We beat Hampton!’”
“It was another example of his intelligence and it was not the first time he blocked a kick that year.”
Coming out of high school, Carey reportedly turned down an offer from Yale because of financial considerations. At Norfolk State, Carey was a three-time member of the MEAC all-academic team.
“He is obviously a smart guy,” Friedman said. “He played ton of positions and in high school he played some quarterback and some wide receiver and that is what makes him such a good cornerback. He knows where to be on the field. That’s never been a problem.”
“He came in and instantly picked up the system and got immediate playing time very young. That doesn’t always happen here. I know it’s a Division I-AA school, but he made an impact right away.”
In four seasons, Carey played in 44 games with 179 tackles, 24 pass break ups and 10 interceptions. Despite coming from a small school, Carey felt he fit in during the pre-draft workouts according to Friedman.
“The adjustment to the NFL is going to be huge,” she said. “He has that work ethic. A lot of people say that, but Don doesn’t have any sense of entitlement. He’s dying for the opportunity. He didn’t think he was destined for the NFL the last four years. He was making plans for life after football. Now he’s got a chance to play in the NFL and it’s exciting for him.
“He’s the first one in 12 years to get drafted from Norfolk State. He’s got the speed, it’s just a matter of if he can adjust to the bigger, faster guys. He swears he fits right in and if it’s indeed true, he should be fine.”
