What We Watched: Week 3

I really don't even know where to start.  This team has so many problems there is no quick fix. I refuse to believe Eric Mangini & Co. waltzed into Cleveland and made this team worse. But that is how it looks.

The Browns have no legitimate threats on offense and were not even in the neighborhood of scoring a touchdown Sunday. The way it looks at this point, the one glaring hole is at quarterback. At this point it isn't even a controversy. Neither one is capable of moving the ball.

Let's take a look at What We Watched.

Progress, Anyone?
All I ask for is something positive to build on from week-to-week. I want you to really think about what the Browns did against the Ravens that was positive. Go ahead, I'll give you a minute. The answer is nothing. If it is possible, the team once again regressed from the previous week. I can probably make an argument that we are farther away from knowing what direction this team is going than we were a week ago.

Browns - Lewis = ?
This actually wasn't as much of a train wreck as expected. The Ravens had the No. 1 rushing defense entering Sunday. The Browns managed to rush for 71 yards. Although that isn't the most impressive stat, Jerome Harrison played well considering the circumstances. James Davis, on the other hand, did not impress in the few carries he did get.

Play Calling vs. Quinn's Decision Making
This is from the play-by-play on ESPN.com:

1st and 10 at BLT 48 (14:40) (No Huddle) B.Quinn up the middle to BLT 46 for 2 yards (J.Bannan).

I had to put it in here because I wanted to make sure I was not seeing things. Where to begin? The play calling is awful. It was first down with 14 minutes to go in the second quarter on the Baltimore 48-yard line. The Browns ran a quarterback sneak. Not a quarterback draw ... a sneak. A sneak like you run on fourth down and 1.

Not just the play calling, but the predictability is unreal. Every time a player goes in motion, the Browns run the ball. Even though the play calling is awful, Quinn's decision making is poor. Quinn is not ready to be leading this team to victories. He doesn't have much to work with in terms of talent around him, but even if he had talent, he is too afraid to make a mistake. So Mangini benches him and opens up a whole can of worms that I was hoping we would avoid.

Enter DA. Three terrible interceptions and a 30 quarterback rating later, we realize that the Browns have no real options a quarterback. Even worse, there is no real way to fix it. Neither Quinn nor Anderson are any good. The Browns are stuck with them until next year. The only thing worse than going through the rest of this year with Tweedledee and Tweedledum at quarterback is going to be watching the Browns next year.

Hypothetically, they draft Colt McCoy and he starts next year. Braylon Edwards is gone in free agency. Brian Robiskie and Mohamed Massaquoi aren't playmakers. Josh Cribbs is not being used correctly and I don't think he is full-fledged receiver. Jamal Lewis will be another year older and slower. Free agents will be avoiding Cleveland like the plague. Add all this up and you have a rookie quarterback in the absolute worst position imaginable. The Browns have to figure out a way to turn the thing around or they will be in a vicious circle that will never stop.

John St. Clair < Blocking Dummy
The Browns did a good job keeping an extra player in to help protect the right side. It is the only option other than benching St. Clair for someone that can block a defender one-on-one without help. St. Clair still needs to be replaced. Add it to the list of the many holes the Browns need to address.

Can we PLEASE get Cribbs his touches?
Apparently not. Two targets, one catch for two yards. I am so confused about what the Browns are trying to accomplish right now that my head hurts. Why would you want to get one of your few playmakers involved in the offense? Hell, at this point let him play quarterback, it can't get any worse.

I'm afraid the years of frustration and anger have started to evolve into apathy and hopelessness. This bad team is getting worse, quarter by quarter. It's gotten so bad I unconsciously found myself getting excited for the Bengals today.

I don't share you're evaluation of the talent on this team. These are a lot of the same guys who won 10 games two years ago. Quinn played well under Romeo last year and he wasn't a great coach either.

I honestly think this team is not playing with any passion. they don't care about winning for this coach. they are like robots out there swatting at the ball trying to get a turnover because it's been drilled in the head. meanwhile the guy is running by them for a touchdown.

Fantastic evaluation. This Cleveland High Browns team had me cutting the grass throughout the game.

This team is terribly disappointing. The locker room fight wasn't nothing and five players filing grievances against the coach with the union is not good.

From the beginning, I have thought that Romeo should have been given his last year. Fire Savage if you want. Wait one more year, play Quinn, develop talent and then hire a Holmgren, Shannahan or Cower.

The wheels have been off the bus for a long time. This team needs a huge turn-around in play and mentality to "change the culture" in Cleveland.

It starts at the top.

You are entirely correct. This starts at the top. Randy Lerner made a hasty, impulsive decision to bring in a coach with a losing record, despised by most of his players and unrespected by his peers. He turns his new team upside down, bringing in those few individuals from the Jets that actually supported his philosophy, and in doing so, dismantles the few positives remaining. Quinn and Anderson aren't great, but they've both shown they can play. Mangini has NEVER shown he can coach and the regression of the Browns is proof. Randy Lerner - man up, admit your mistake, fire Mangini and let the rebuilding begin NOW.

Randy had to make a quick hire.
He was running late for his flight to England for the Aston Villa game.

I don't believe that Quinn or Anderson are getting a fair shake here. The problems aren't really with them, the problems are with the coaching, which doesn't seem like the goal is winning.

In college football, a coach is required to make an effort to win; I don't see that from Mangini. When down 27-0, you're better off trying to make it a 3 score game by getting a TD than a field goal. He saved the shutout, but he didn't try to win. Is it worth firing Mangini? Probably not. Better would be for Lerner to sit down with Mangini and demand, if not a win, than a clear and demonstrated effort to win. No more field goals when behind - no more "safe" calls - what Cleveland needs is something to make the offense more dynamic, it excite the fans and the team itself about the possibility of emerging from the mud it's sitting in.

I've said it before and I've said it again, with little talent the Dolphins energized their team through creativity. I seek the same from the Browns, and can only hope that Lerner will demand the same - his ticket sales rely on it.

Dan, last week I wrote a scathing response to your post. Thank you for posting this week, what is obvious to anyone watching, QUINN STINKS!!!!! I am going to give DA a pass ONLY because it is not fair to judge his performance based on the circumstances. Having said that, his performance was despicable and he should be jailed. All summer long, and for the past 2 years fans have begged for Quinn and this is what we get. He is as bad if not worse than Charlie Frye. At this point, they should play Anderson because at least the games will be watchable. He provides entertaining throws, even if they are rarely to another member of the Browns.

Great points:

"All I ask for is something positive to build on from week-to-week. "

"I am so confused about what the Browns are trying to accomplish right now that my head hurts. "

If the Browns do end up drafting a qb with their top five pick we are looking at '99 all over again, albeit with a better offensive line.

Runaway train, never coming back. Wrong way on a one way track.

Tony - I couldnt' help but think of you when DA was put in the game. I can't imagine you had a smile on your face or have been laughing to yourself after this game. Actually, nevermind, I was laughing so hard after the game because of how pathetic our team is and the embarassment of a team we put out there to try to play football.

Both QBs were equally bad out there. Both threw the exact interception (supposed to go over, went under). I believe this is Mangini's way of blatantly saying - I know you'll ask for DA during the week, this game is lost, so I'll show you exactly what a poor decision that would be. DA tripled the interceptions, and while he did move the offense a whopping 92 yards (almost triple!), it all resulted in the same old crap. Bad decisions, no wide receivers open, no time in the pocket, no respectable running game (although Harrison did perform a little below average, which unfortunately was the best performance on the team).

We're stuck right back in the Couch/Holcomb era. I don't know what the hell we did to get the team back, or maybe even what we did to get LeBron, but the Browns are just awfully cursed and in terrible shape. DA is the new Holcomb (journeyman with some big number games), Quinn is the new Couch (1st round draft pick QB). We are blessed with one side of an offensive line. Our star WR can't hang on to balls (Northcutt anyone), no talent or depth behind them. We have no running game (remember Suggs/Willie Green? Awesome. Jamal Lewis needs to watch his back to ensure he won't get stabbed). On the other side of the ball, we have a great defensive line, but no linebackers to speak of. We have one average CB, and one average safety. Half ass team, half ass expectations, half ass effort.

Ladies and Gentlemen, your 2003 Cleveland Browns!!! Wait, what year is this again?

Start your fantasy players against the Browns...

Dan...I was NOT laughing after the game. I was ptfo....how in the world can 1 team be so clueless. for the record, I no huge fan of Andersons. I think he COULD have been a franchise guy if the franchise had built around him after 07. If they had traded Quinn then and built around DA MAYBE he would not have been the guy we see now. he clearly IS NOT a long term solution. But obviously, neither is Quinn. At this point I do not really blame either guy for his failures. Nobody and I mean nobody would have been successful under the circumstances. Quinn should have been given a fair shot to be an NFL qb,somewhere else. If DA did not succeed the team would be right back where they are now, perhaps with some extra talent that the trade of Quinn would brought in. Instead they now have 2 guys that are untradeable, a dearth of talent, sinking morale and a shrinking fan base. My frustration is that anybody with half of a brain would have seen this coming LAST YEAR...before the season. Instead of developing 2 QB's they ruined 2. And exactly what was the point of trying to develop 2 qb;s anyway? In case they have not noticed, only 1 QB plays at a time. I am so sick of these guys trying to convince me that they have 2 good Qb's whther it's these 2 guys, Couch and Holcombe or whoever the hell they try sell me. All of this could have been avoided by trading Quinn after 07...what any smart organization would have done.

Well things look tough for Browns fans

I think main issue if offensive playcall whis is probably unbelieveble.

Those wildcat at GL, those predictable pre snap motion taht give sign to D that a run is coming or best of the best a Qb sneak on 1&10 open field. Never seen it.

Well BQ looked good last year looks lost now. DA who knows perhaps a better option but is unconsistent.

Who knows ?

Obviously Mangini has lost locker room and people ask for his head after 3 games... Thats incredible.
