Time to greet the return of Browns football

Feeling refreshed? Ready to greet Monday with a smile on your face? Is the palate cleansed?

A Sunday without Browns football has come and gone, but the team was not forgotten. Browns owner Randy Lerner is said to be interested in Mike Holmgren, the former Packers and Seahawks general manager and coach.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Sunday Holmgren's position in Cleveland would be similar to that of Bill Parcells in Miami. After the Dolphins 1-15 season in 2007, Parcells was hired as the Vice President of Football Operation. It was Parcells who brought in head coach Tony Sparano and general manager Jeff Ireland.

Holmgren is at least intrigued by the Cleveland Browns. It's a good feeling someone is showing interest after being shunned by top football men like Bill Cowher and Ernie Accorsi.

Holmgen, 60, owns a career regular season record of 161-111 and has 12 playoff appearances in 16 years as a head coach. It is not known if Holmgren wants to be a head coach or if he wants to simply stay in the front office. Either way, Eric Mangini's future not on solid footing.

As far as a general manager candidates, I had two men I wanted to see in the running for the Browns GM job last year. They weren't. But with George Kokinis out of the picture those names are still available. Thankfully, John Taylor's Sunday story about Holmgren on the Orange and Brown Report had those two names — Charlie Casserly and Floyd Reese.

Casserly is currently employed by CBS. He served as the Washington Redskins general manager from 1989-99 and among his Pro Bowl draft picks are running back Stephen Davis, wide receiver Keenan McCardell and tight end Frank Wycheck.

Casserly was named NFL Executive of the Year in 1999 after trading the Redskins' fifth-overall pick to New Orleans for all of the Saints 1999 picks as well as their first and third-round picks in 2000.

After the end of the 1999 season, Casserly was fired by owner Dan Snyder. Casserly took over the Houston Texans and has helped land some cornerstones of the Texans current roster. Casserly drafted wide receiver Andre Johnson, linebacker DeMarco Ryans and, most notably, defensive end Mario Williams. After the 2006 NFL Draft, Casserly was ridiculed for not taking USC running back Reggie Bush. Three years later, Williams is a stud and Bush is, well, serviceable at best.

As for Floyd Reese, he served as Tennessee Titans general manager from 1994-2006 and currently is a senior football adviser for the New England Patriots. During his tenure, Reese won the most games as a Titans/Oilers general manager (111) and drafted three NFL Rookie of the Year's of his 11 first-round draft picks in running back Eddie George, defensive end Jevon Kearse and quarterback Vince Young. Reese also drafted quarterback Steve McNair.

Finally, it wouldn't be the start of a Browns game week without talking about quarterbacks. It appears Quinn's future in Cleveland is not dead after all and it was just placed on life-support.

I leave you with this nugget from the OBR's Taylor.

A source who had contact to Holmgren said that Holmgren "really likes" Brady Quinn who he sees as "an ideal West Coast kind of quarterback."

Mike H0lmgren would be an exelent choice for front oofice position! Especialy with John Gruden as hed coach. Holmgren and Gruden have a relation ship that dates back to their days in Green Bay and Gruden would be the perfect guy to develope Quinn. Steve Burliene was darn nere unstopable under Gruden and Gruden did what Dungy could not in Tampa Bay.

What would the job description of the vp of football operations actually be? What is it that Parcells actually does? We know that Holmgren has a winning record as coach, but he won't be coaching in this position, right? So how do we judge him as a candidate?

It's not so much what he'd do as taking away power from the Mangenius and instituting a real front office structure like most real teams have. A VP of football ops, GM then head coach with the VP being responsible for everything football related. Most VP's hire good football people for the other two slots and stand back and watch but aren't afraid to step in when necessary something this team needs badly. I'm not sure if Mangini is a capable head coach but if the actual performance of the team was his only responsibility instead of making trades, etc. he might be capable. If Lerner hires someone like Holmgren or McKay, we probably won't get to see since I sure he'll be shown the door.

This is what should have been done when Butchie left. Phil the Shil Savage might have been an okay personnel guy if he'd had someone above him to reign him in. Romeo might even have been a serviceable coach but we'll never know.

Go for them. Both would see through Manidiot's BS in nothing flat. Keep us posted. I want to get a front row seat in Berea to see Manidiot escorted out by security.

In advance, GOOD RIDDANCE, Manidiot!
