I want to first start and apologize for the delay of the article. The 4 p.m. kickoff, coupled with a bar that had Christmas Ale on tap made for quite a rough Sunday for the No Logo Needed staff. I assure all of you that we are now back on our game, which is more than I can say for our hapless Browns.
Actually, the Browns looked decent against a very good San Diego team. The offense wasn't as anemic as in games past, the defense however was a different story.
Onto What We Watched.
Are the Browns going to be able to field a complete team?
They did field a complete team, but it was a struggle on defense. Mike Furrey saw significant time at defensive back and Jason Trusnick started at middle linebacker. Basically, this was a game I didn't have much hope for and for good reason. The Browns are depleted and nothing is going to be fixed on that front this season. So, expect more of the same from a defense full of back ups and special teamers. By the way, David Veikune didn't record a tackle. Good thing we picked him in the second round, huh?
Holding the Chragers to less than 175 yards rushing will be a chore
Turns out it wasn't. The Chargers only rushed for 91 yards. However, I wish it was because the Browns played lock-down run defense. Instead, the Chargers were too busy passing for 386 yards. Rivers carved up the Browns defense like he was scrimmaging against a junior varsity squad.
Quinn has five games left to show he is competent
Brady did a very good job against a very good Chargers defense. He finished the game 25 of 45 passing for 271 yards and three touchdowns. What impressed me the most was he didn't throw an interception. He did have a costly fumble, but I think that can be blamed mostly on the offensive line. This was a step in the right direction. Hopefully Quinn can keep improving.
Vincent Jackson and Shawne Merriman
Unfortunately, Shawne Merriman didn't play. Maybe, for Quinn's sake, it was fortunate. However, Vincent Jackson did play, but didn't put up big numbers. He had two catches for 54 yards (one was a 41-yarder). He was not sensational, however, I still think Jackson needs to be a main free-agent target in the Browns' offseason.
