Many NFL insiders say free agency is going to be quick and easy. For the Browns, news broke Wednesday night they may be very active, not so much in the free agent market, but in the trade market. Obviously, the Browns are open to doing anything that can improve the team. The more I break down possible scenarios, the more excited I get about the direction this offseason might go.
Let's first start with free agency. There is a good chance the Browns go after Thomas Jones (RB) and Dunta Robinson (CB), who are both unrestricted free agents. With more than 200 restricted free agents being tendered for high draft picks, chances are many of the RFA's simply stay with their current teams.
So how do teams, like the Browns, go about obtaining their serious needs?
First, we will have to wait until later today to see what the tenders are going to be for the Browns RFA's. The rumor is the Browns are not tendering any player for a first-round pick. That is hard to believe because Harrison will get a first-round tender so no one will touch him. Everyone else will be up for consideration, which means the Browns are looking to gather more draft picks since the UFA class is weak. It is obvious the Browns want as many draft picks as possible because it is a deep draft class and also for trade considerations.
Second, with very few RFA's expected to be offered — based on how valuable draft picks will be in the draft — trades will be the only way to improve a team. The Browns have some tradable commodities that make sense. Browns GM Tom Heckert should be shopping Shaun Rogers, if he isn't already. It makes sense. This is a deep defensive tackle draft class and the Browns love Ahtyba Rubin. Rogers, who is 33, is the Browns only tradeable commodity that could yield a high-end player or draft pick. Rogers is not in the future plans for the Browns. I love watching Rogers play, but moving him to a contender for a young quarterback like Kevin Kolb or draft picks makes football sense.
I could also see the Browns shopping linebacker D'Qwell Jackson based on his unhappiness with being tendered. I don't know if there is a huge market for Jackson. He wants a new deal and thinks he's worth more than he is because he led the league in tackles. Of course, a majority of those tackles were eight yards downfield.
When it comes to the Browns quarterback duo, can Heckert can work his magic and get more than a pair of tube socks for Derek Anderson? Will the Browns shop Brady Quinn if they get a deal for a guy like Kolb or a veteran?
Now everyone's favorite part of the offseason, the draft. I find it hard to believe the Browns, or anyone for that matter, will spend a top-ten pick on a cornerback that ran a 4.6. Also, if the Browns go hard after free agent Robinson, as I expect them to do, a cornerback won't be the most glaring need. Safety and linebacker are the Browns' biggest concerns. Eric Berry or Rolando McClain would both work just fine. The Browns would then be in position to take a right tackle in the second round like Selvish Capers or Charles Brown. The Browns may even be able to sneak back up in the first and grab safety Taylor Mays. In the third round is where a quarterback like Dan LeFevour is available.
All of these are "what if" scenarios. That is what is so great about March 5. We will start to get answers.
As for a wish list, here is mine:
Sign Thomas Jones
Sign Dunte Robinson
Trade Quinn and Anderson for picks (or a package of Gummi Bears)
Trade Rogers for a capable veteran quarterback (McNabb or Hassleback)
Trade Jackson for picks
Draft Eric Berry in first (might have to move up)
Draft Sean Weatherspoon in second
Draft Dan LeFevour in third

If we trade shaun Rogersfor Matt Hasselback, I will come unglued.
Are you the CZAR?
Or are you a member of the 'wannabe' tribe that has been smoking native vegetation?
Let the CZAR work his magic!
Notice that the CZAR has been observant but silent!
The CZAR is ready to reveal his plans!
Soon the minions of the CZAR will act!
The CZAR will speak!
The plan will be revealed and apparent to the assembled masses!
Long live the CZAR!
May his plan bring good fortune to Berea!
May the 'wannabes' be short lived!
May the 'wannabes' smoke poison ivy before their next round of predictions!
I couldn't agree more about D'Qwell. All those tackles he made...I can't remember one that actually made an impact. The defense played better when he was off the field. The only guy I'm not excited about is Hasselback. I'd take Mcnabb or Kolb for Rogers, but not Hasselback.
If we trade Quinn and Anderson we will set our program back 3 years (the thought of more rookie QB's woe's pangs me). Quinn has been developing, he just needs WR's and a decent offensive scheme. We should keep him and give him a full season.
I want Jackson back. Before his injury, he was on his way to having great back to back seasons.
You have seemingly forgotten our most glaring need--WR!!! It deserves Terry Holt AND a 3rd rd pick, nothing less.
@ Matthew
I agree our wide receivers are not a sexy group, but if we go out and get a veteran quarterback we should be ok. Look at what McNabb did with nothing for years in Philly. I;m not saying we couldn't use the help, just that I think there are more glaring needs than WR
is it just me.. but the browns not tendering any of their RFA's 1st round tenders is b/c they're looking for another team to take them off their hands.. if we load up w/2nd rd picks.. we could use them to trade up or trade for future picks..
D jackson thinks being the best player on a real bad defense means something.. he'll find out that he aint worth much.. if we get a 2nd for him we'll be lucky..
@ Z,
Yeah, but this is a pretty thin receiving corps, not only thin on depth but experience.
BROWNS 2010 Checklist
1. Free agency- WR (T.O. or Holt). Sign OLB/DE Julius Peppers and OLB Joey Porter. Sign Antrell Rolle and move him back to CB.
2. Put Rubin at NT, (Peppers) and (Peters) at DE. OLB's (Porter) and Wimbley, ILB's (Johnson) and Roth.
3. Trade Corey Williams for picks, and cut D.A. Trade Shaun Rogers and Brady Quinn with a pick to Eagles for Kolb or McNabb. Tender D'Qwell for a 2nd rounder and let another team pick him up.
4. Draft-1st round- FS Eric Berry
2nd round- RT Charles Brown, Mike Iupati, Anthony
Davis, or Vladimar Ducasse.
3rd round- LG John Jerry and RB Toby Gerhart.
4th Round- SS Myron Rolle.
5th round- TE Dennis Pitta, ILB Micah Johnson, and WR Freddie
Barnes.
6th round RG Brandon Carter and DE Corey Peters.
7th round CB Walter McFadden
5. Pay Josh Cribbs!!!! Franchise tag Jerome Harrison. Re-sign Lawrence Vickers, Evan Moore and Matt Roth.
TJ for sure
Rhodes or Rolle at S
Sign vetran WR
As far as the draft
1st-Haden (if he gets his time back up) if not McClain
2nd-McCoy QB
Hernandez TE
3rd-Gerhart Rb
Other picks
S-Anderson Russel or/both
S-Myron Rolle
OLB/DE
O-Line Right side help/depth
Hopefully work out deal for McNabb
If we can get Gholston or Everette Brown, after bad seasons, for cheap then I think with 11 picks in the draft we should take a chance on 1st round talent
Give up-Anderson, Quinn, Rodgers (or move to DE)
If Haden time not up sign Robinson or trade 3rd rounder for Cromartie
Why in the world would anyone sign T.O. or Torry Holt right now?? Especially when the Cardinals are supposedly asking for a 3rd round pick for Boldin?
1) Sign Dunta Robinson and Thomas Jones, Maybe Kevin Mawae
2) Cut Derek Anderson (nobody is going to trade for his contract... Not even the raiders)
3) Start Brady quinn... He may not be great but his contract is signed and we don't need to use a draft pick or make a trade for him, Lets see what he can do.
4)The Draft:
a) Come away from the first round with Eric Berry. Even if we have to send a third rounder to the chiefs to move up to #5 Eric Berry Eric Berry Eric Berry.
b) Draft a linebacker in the second(Sergio Kindle? God I hope so.) maybe even move up if there's a reasonable deal to be made to get Kindle.
c) use the 3 picks in the third and fourth rounds to pick up a couple offensive lineman and maybe a Linebacker. Names I like are Ciron Black, Jered Veldheer, Brandon Spikes (if he runs poorly)
d) I'd love to see TE Jimmy Graham in brown and orange. Kid is a great athlete, and though raw, might make a great project pick, considering he didn't look bad at the senior bowl or combine. He could be had in the 4th or 5th round.
e) FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DON'T DRAFT A QB. Its wasting a perfectly good draft pick. There will be quarterbacks who come out next year, I promise. Let's hand Quinn the reigns, and if he tanks we can draft somebody else.
I want Boldin for that 3rd round pick. I would also think about shopping Rogers to Chicago for Olsen. I believe Brady will be OK if he has some weapons like that.
I agree with trading Rogers, both QBs (if someone would take them or cut DA at least), Corey Williams, and tendering D Jackson to get a 2nd rounder.
I don't agree with not drafting Haden. He was phenomenal in college. Before the combine every story I read was about how great his coverage skills and run support are. He's a lock down man to man cover corner. He has bad 40 times cuz of his bad starting stance. Deion Sanders said that. He'll be a pro-bowler for the next 10 yrs. All too often people put way too much stock in combine performances and it overshadows the strengths or weaknesses of the player i.e. Vernon Gholston.
I also don't like what I've heard about Sean Weatherspoon. Reports were that the guy doesn't stop talking loudly and draws attention to himself. One team exec said there's no way he would want him on his team. It's true that he had an amazing workout. But we've had too many character issues on this team. We don't need to bring in another Winslow or Edwards. Character is just as important as talent.
@ JET
I like Weatherspoon, not because he is a me first guy, but because he is a leader that this team desperately needs on defense. If you watched the Senior Bowl, the defense that Weatherspoon played on was aggressive and together and they flew to the ball and got excited. A lot of that was the leadership of Weatherspoon. At the Combine he was nothing but professional. You may be right and he ends up being a bust, but I think whoever takes him will get a leader and playmaker
I say they trade for Undertake and Kane. How do you stop a dead man?
It's getting cold in here....
Enjoy reading this blog for people thoughtful opinions to "what would you do?" instead of name calling and Quinn Vs Anderson love/hate.
Wouldn't pick up Thomas Jones. Would rather pick up a bruiser to pair with Harrison...someone like Blount - as long as he checks out in interviews.
Tory Holt would be a nice pickup to mentor the young receiver core since I doubt if there is a way to pick up Jackson (SD) or Marshall (Den) without giving up a bunch of picks.
Sign Cole G/C from Philly.
Draft
1st - Haden CB (unless Berry falls)
2nd - Hernandez TE if available. If not best RT Available (Ducasse)
3rd - Gerhart RB if available. If not best Safety.
3rd - Best LB
4th - Moeaki (TE) if Hernandez not taken. If not then another CB or LB
Later round flyers:
Blount - RB Oregon
Hiller QB Western Michigan
Colquitt - Punter Tenn or Butler Punter GA
Go Browns.
I agree that this is about giving opinions and not bashing or making your statement as though it is fact.
With that in mind, here is my OPINION with no thought that it's perfectly right.....
-I believe that picking up Holt would be great. His production was better than any of our receivers, but more importantly he is a veteran that can and will instruct our young talent.
-Honestly, I'm not sure what to think about Haden. I'm not one to feel that combine numbers mean more than college career. With that said, Haden showed in college he has talent and can stop top line receivers. Now I will just trust that Browns management will be able to use their expertise to make the right decision.
-I'm against picking a QB in the 1st round but again if Browns management, who are much better experts at interpreting talent, determine Clausen or Bradford are worth it....well, I don't have the skill to argue. But, my instinct is that management won't feel that way.
-I would absolutely HATE having T.O. come to Cleveland. He is a cancer. This is my strongest opinion and as close as I get to "fact".
- I don't know talent and players well enough to say who I'd like the Browns to draft, but I can say I hope they take a CB and/or S (in 1st round and later rounds), OL (2nd or 3rd rounds), catching TE (Pitta??? 4th round) and a bruiser type running back to pair with Harrison.
- Personally I'm against bringing in McNabb. If we trade I'd rather have a younger QB (Kolb if he's worth it). I still feel Quinn deserves a chance with WR's who have experience and someone like Holmgren who can guide a QB.
- I don't mind losing Jackson for a draft pick. Yes, he had a lot of tackles, but I'm more concerned about quality than quantity and feel his tackles were too far down field, meaning he was letting the play come to him rather than aggressively going after it like Ray Lewis does. I'd hate to lose Vickers or Harrison.
-I'm ok with trading Rogers for the right price (I should also say that most choices are good or bad depending on the cost/price). He has significant talent but the Browns are rebuilding and could possibly get a good draft choice or player from a team who needs one more piece like Rogers.
@ Z
If the Browns draft Weatherspoon then I'm sure your assessment of him is right. Holmgren and Heckert won't take guys with questionable characters. That having been said, I was amazed by his agility, fluidity, and change of direction. He resembled a DB in a LB body. If he's a self-centered loudmouth, I don't want him. If he is a loudmouth leader, then I'm all for him.
@ JET
He Tweeted yesterday that the Dolphins had him clocked at 4.43 at his pro day. He also did 35 reps on the bench. I know none of that matters a whole lot, but if he doesn't make it in the league, it won't because he doesn't have the physical tools
